Short description
Drugs, Sex & Love in Berlin at the start of the 1990s.
In 1993 more than 60,000 people saw Michael Stock’s film “Prince in Hell” about the gay junkie Jockel, it was screened at the world’s most important film festivals and won many audience prizes. Despite this it has taken ten years before this work was finally available for viewing at home for the first time.
“My darling children! Let me tell you the tale of the handsome prince, the valiant miller’s son, the stern king and the deceitful wizard Aetschibaetschi. The tale of the Prince in Hell!”
This fairy tale is told by the jester Firlefanz who attracts junkies from Berlin’s Kottbusser Tor with his hand-puppet theatre. The story is about a prince who falls in love with the miller’s son. The king banishes him because of it. They flee into the forest of the magical realm of Hell, however their bliss is stopped dead in its tracks because the prince increasingly becomes enslaved to his sweet dreams, caused by the powder from the evil wizard.
This puppet show sets up the framework of the story of the ‘princes’ Jockel and Stefan, whose friendship shatters on Jockel’s heroin addiction. Residing between the escapist idyll of a trailer commune, the junkie scene in Kreuzberg and shrill drag-queen bars, Jockel and Stefan lose themselves in a frenzy of sex, drugs and jealousy. “Prince in Hell” is simultaneously a document about the contemporary scene because it shows Kreuzberg as it once used to be. It invites you into bygone locations like Café Anal or the legendary O-Bar.
